Thinking about becoming an S corporation?
An S corporation can lower self-employment tax once your profit is high enough to pay yourself a reasonable salary. It also adds payroll, a separate business return, and more paperwork.
We’ll run the numbers and tell you honestly whether it makes sense at your income. If it does, we’ll file the election (Form 2553) and set up the tax side properly.
Deadlines
S corporation returns are due March 15 for calendar-year businesses. An extension moves the filing deadline to September 15.
To have S corporation status start this year, the election is generally due within two months and 15 days of the start of the tax year.
Questions
Is the owner’s personal return included?
No. The $1,200 covers the S corporation return. Your personal return starts at $250.
Do you prepare C corporation returns?
No. We work with S corporations, partnerships, LLCs, and sole proprietors.
What is a reasonable salary?
It’s what you’d have to pay someone else to do your job. The IRS expects S corporation owners who work in the business to pay themselves a fair wage before taking distributions. We’ll help you land on a number you can defend.
